Essex - Getting The Fun Into Great Value Family Holidays !

If you’re looking for an unforgettable UK holiday that offers both adventure and relaxation, then a trip to Essex is the perfect choice for you. There is much more to this county than meets the eye and it has a lot to offer visitors, whether you want to chill out on the beach or explore local historical attractions.

How to get there

Essex is located in the south-east of England and borders the north-east of the city of London. It is easily accessible from the capital and other parts of the country thanks to its excellent network of rail and local bus routes. It is also served by major roads including the M25, M11 and A12, meaning you will have no trouble reaching Essex for your holiday, no matter where in the UK you are travelling from.

Where to stay

Once you arrive in Essex you will, of course, need somewhere to stay. There is a fantastic selection of hotels, B&Bs, holiday parks, camping sites and self-catering options, meaning you will be able to find something that suits you, whether you want to stay inland or prefer to be beside the sea.

Hotels range from sprawling country mansions set in stunning gardens to modern and contemporary city accommodation. Or, if you are taking a break with your family, perhaps one of the many holiday parks dotted along the coast would be more your thing as many of these provide not only somewhere to stay, but access to swimming pools, sports facilities and entertainment.

Things to see and do

So, once you’ve arrived in Essex, what is there to see and do during your holiday? Well as you know the county is situated on the coast and it is home to 350 miles of stunning coastline that is just waiting to be explored. Two of the liveliest resorts are Southend-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea, while Walton-on-the-Naze and Frinton-on-Sea are much quieter if you are looking for some peace and relaxation.

While you could easily spend a summer day basking in the sun’s rays and chilling out on the beach, the Essex coastline has a lot more to offer than just sand and you should ensure you venture out on some cliff top walks, as well as visiting historic ports such as Harwich. If you want to stop for a bite to eat, you have to check out some of the local family-run restaurants such as the Company Shed, while Mersea Island - the most easterly inhabited island in the UK – is well worth a visit.

As well as beautiful beaches, there are lots of attractions and activities for all the family in Essex. Lee Valley White Water Centre is the first London 2012 venue to open after the Olympic Games and you can book white water rafting from £30pp. Group and individual rafting adventures are available, while you can also try canoeing and kayaking.

As well as rafting, there are many other activities on offer in Essex such as horse riding, cycling, golf, sailing and kitesurfing, and organisations offering these past times and dotted all over the county. You should also take the opportunity to explore Essex on foot by following one of the many pre-mapped walking routes, all of which can be found online.

Historical sites

Like most counties in England, Essex isn’t without its historical sites and stately homes. You don’t need to have a keen interest in history to experience the grandeur and splendour of these beautiful buildings and they are well worth a visit.

Audley End House is a huge Jacobean stately home and boasts more than 30 lavishly decorated rooms, while Colchester Castle is the largest Norman keep in Europe and dates back around 1,000 years. Other attractions that are well worth a visit are Layer Marney Tower, Barleylands, Hedingham Castle, the Beth Chatto Gardens and Hylands House. Plus, no visit to Essex would be complete without a ride on the Epping Ongar Railway – the longest heritage railway in Essex.

So, if you’re planning a holiday to Essex this year, it’s certain you will never be short of things to see and do - just make sure you go for long enough to fit everything in!
