Scarborough

At the heart of the east Yorkshire coast is the resort of Scarborough, which is widely recognised as the first seaside resort in the world. Its two beaches, in the North Bay and South Bay, are interrupted by a rocky headland on which stands historic Scarborough Castle, parts of which date as far back as the Iron Age.

The castle has been substantially restored in recent years, and excavations found evidence of the five sieges to which it has been subjected. During the English Civil War, the castle was the only royalist stronghold on England's east coast, and it was not surrendered to the Parliamentarians until 1645.Scarborough is also home to four theatres, including one of Yorkshire's most famous, the Stephen Joseph Theatre, which is the home of regular new productions by the county's foremost playwright, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, who spent 38 years as its artistic director.

Bridlington

Bridlington was first established in the 11th century as a small fishing port, and during the heyday of the British seaside Holiday, in the late 19th and early 20th century it was one of the most popular resorts in England.

Filey

The smaller resort of Filey lies between the two aforementioned resorts. This rose to prominence when, in the 1850s, a sweeping crescent of upmarket houses was built on seven acres of land overlooking the North Sea, becoming for about a century what was considered the most desirable and fashionable address in all of northern England.

The area is reached by a number of main roads which run east and north-east from Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, over the Humber Bridge. But unlike many other seaside resorts, both Scarborough and Bridlington are still served by a good regular rail service, which also makes them accessible by people who do not have access to a car.
